If you love your motorhome, you'll want to protect the engine from the dangers that dust, dirt, grit, leaves, pebbles and other detritus can bring. One of the best ways of doing this is to invest in a suitable grille;
covering the opening right at the front of the vehicle, the grille allows air to circulate at the same time as keeping out unwanted objects. Given the importance of the grille in keeping your vehicle intact, picking one that's strong and durable is obviously a priority. So, too, is the need to make sure it's well-fitting: a wrongly shaped or poorly fitted grille can mean there are gaps for unwanted objects to enter the engine cavity. In extreme cases, the grille may even fall off while the motorhome is on the road! With all this in mind, we take a look at whether a DIY motorhome grille is a possible - or even preferable - choice over purchasing a purpose-built item.
Although it's perfectly possible to shape a suitable grille for your motorhome, you'll need more than a screwdriver and a pair of pliers! If you haven't got tools which are suitable for cutting extremely tough stainless steel mesh, or the right equipment to fix it into position, a DIY radiator grille is going to be difficult to achieve.
DIY Mesh Grille - Have You Got The Right Tools?
To craft a grille from the right materials and then fit it securely and correctly into position requires a considerable degree of skill, as well as patience. If you've got previous experience in metal fabrication and motorhome maintenance, you could well be able to fashion a suitable grille with the right materials. Bear in mind, though, that this could take a considerable amount of time. You may also need to make several different versions in order to create one that's a good fit.
Our How-To DIY Motorhome Grille: Do You Have The Right Skill Set?
Although it's perfectly possible to create a DIY motorhome grille, it can be a time-consuming and frustrating process. In addition to the layout for materials, you may also need to buy additional tools in order to get the job done properly. For all these reasons, it's often preferable to purchase a ready-made grille. Not only will this be manufactured by experts to a high specification, it's also designed for your particular motorhome, resulting in a good, secure fit.
